MyJobMag is one of the best job boards in Africa, posting jobs for professionals across industries. In addition to posting verified jobs, they help job seekers land their dream jobs by sharing career tips, vetting CVs, and giving applicants access to a salary calculator.
Objective
MyJobMag has several job boards in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, and South Africa. They needed to improve organic traffic and readership for its South African website, as the number of visitors was drastically low. So, they hired me to write SEO-driven articles monthly for the website and shadow their in-house SEO strategist.
Problem
With four websites to keep track of, MyJobMag needed an extra writer to handle their South African faction, as it was one of the key African countries they were hoping to break into.
process
When the company hired me, I worked with their SEO Strategist. His plan to grow MyJobMag SA was as follows:
- Write articles regularly on the website.
- Source for quality backlinks and referrals from industry professionals.
- Monitor monthly visits and use insights gained to improve the quality of content.
Over the next 11 months, I would work on the topics assigned to me, participate in forums such as Quora and occasionally write guest posts for career sites with higher authority, which would then link back to ours. Here’s the breakdown:
Monthly Articles
The Strategist added me to the content calendar he had created with keywords and a list of SEO- rich pillar and cluster articles he had selected. Each one was specifically tailored to match the search intent of South African job seekers. An example of such articles was the one I wrote on the Highest Paying Jobs in Johannesburg.
Next, I took over the management of the MyJobMag South Africa website. I contributed to its growth by writing five articles and two guest posts monthly.
Wrote scripts for the company’s YouTube channel and presented videos weekly for subscribers.
Backlink Building and Referrals

Met the backlink building objective by writing and publishing guest posts on sites like Sooper Articles, Opera News and Biz Community.
I also answered career-related questions on Quora and linked to similar articles on the website as a way to increase organic reach and brand visibility.
I wrote an article, 12 Career Experts Share Their Best Advice for Making A Successful Career Change and tagged the professionals mentioned on Twitter. This generated engagement for MyJobMag SA’s Twitter page and drove more traffic to the website.
Monthly visits and Insights
The more I wrote for the company, the more imperative it became for me to learn how to use Google Analytics. Under the guidance of the SEO Strategist, I took the Analytics course and subsequently learned how to interpret metrics.
Monitored Google Analytics monthly to identify which cities in South Africa had the highest number of visits.
The insights gained from Analytics also showed which of our articles had the most visits. We ranked them by performance and recreated successful articles by writing on similar topics.
This tool was great for tracking bounce rate and developing strategies on how to reduce it. We wrote 1,000 to 1,500 articles and guides that embellished a topic. Those articles also shared helpful tips for job seekers.
Finally, we used insights gained from user activity on the blog page to tailor and write articles specifically targeted at readers in certain areas in South Africa.
results
I successfully placed the website on the first page of Google multiple times with articles like Highest Paying Jobs In Johannesburg.
The content and keyword strategy that the SEO Strategist developed grew the website’s traffic from just 50 readers to over 1,000 monthly views within two months.
Due to my success with the South African website, the company gave me access to write for the Kenyan website and Nigerian website after the content writer in charge went on leave. This was because they trusted me to replicate the same success I had with MyJobMag South Africa.
Today, the articles on that website pull over 20,000 views for a single blog post, making it one of its most record-breaking and successful projects.
